Why Can't I Stick With Exercise: The 3 Real Barriers
Last time, I mentioned that pain, stress, and low motivation feed each other — and we'd start with pain first, since it's the most tangled up with the other two. So let's begin there to answer the question "why can't i stick with exercise?"
If "pain" and "exercise" feel equivalent in your mind — like exercise is something you have to force through — you're not alone.
It's Not a Willpower Problem
Susan used to believe soreness meant it was working. She'd push through her exercise classes until she felt it the next day, taking that as proof — until one session where she tweaked her back and was sore for a week.
After that, she stopped going altogether. Exercise and pain had become the same word, from two directions: soreness as proof it was working, then a flare-up as proof it wasn't safe.
Why "No Pain, No Gain" Backfires
Over the next few weeks, I'll share the evidence-based truth: exercising to heal and strengthen shouldn't be painful, or it isn't working. We're untying a knot many of us carry — not overnight, but gradually, by experiencing exercise differently.
What Your Body Actually Needs: The Move Well Skills
The shift for Susan was learning her tweaked back was her body telling her brain it needed more time and foundational movement skills, not proof that exercise was dangerous. Once she got clear on her Core Why, restored her Root Movements and Mindsets about her body and exercise, and had a plan with gradual progression, fear and pain stopped running the show. She got stronger with confidence and comfort, no soreness required.
Getting Unstuck, One Step at a Time
That's the same process I walk every client through in the Be Well Now Method — Core Why first, then gradually rewiring how to move well, while untangling exercise and pain.
What are my thoughts about pain and exercise? Have I been avoiding a type of exercise for fear of injury?
